stromlo_pool2The ACT Government committed $33m as part of the 2016-2017 budget for a new 50m pool at Stromlo Forest Park.

The government will soon invite tenders for the design and construction of the Stromlo Pool.

Design will allow for future expansion so the facility can grow over time as part of a unique sporting destination, Stromlo Forest Park.

Active Canberra wants to know what your priorities are for additional facilities and services so this can be considered during the design process. Have you say on Stromlo Pool.

abcAn estimated 30,000 people live in Weston Creek and the newly built suburbs of Wright and Coombs next door.  However the residents in the new areas of Molonglo have no local shops or a service station, and most drive about ten minutes to Coolamon Court in Weston Creek to stock up.

The chair of Weston Creek Community Council Tom Anderson spoke to ABC Canberra breakfast host Laura Tchilinguirian about what’s happening to support new residents in Molonglo.  Click to listen Duration: 6min 18sec

brierlyThe upgrade will focus on improving the amenity and character, landscape, pedestrian connections and safety of Trenerry Square and Brierly Street. These works are part of a long-term plan to revitalise public places, based on the Weston Group Centre Master Plan.

The government will be holding community engagement events at Trenerry Square and inside Cooleman Court at the following times:

  • Friday 3 June 2016, 3.30 pm to 6 pm
  • Saturday 4 June 2016, 10.30 am to 1 pm

Thursday 9 June 2016, 10.30 am to 12.30 pm

The government is also holding some stakeholder workshops next week at the following times:

Weston Creek Community Centre, Meeting Room 1, Parkinson Street, Weston Creek, ACT 2611

  • Monday 6 June, 9 am to 11 am
  • Tuesday 7 June, 9 am to 11 am

The Weston Creek Community Council is disappointed by the approval of a 21-dwelling medium density development planned for Featherston Ridge in Weston.

The $7.7 million Bellette Street project is proposed for a block within the Defence Housing Australia estate sold to private developers in mid-2015.

Public submissions on the plans took issue with the 7.6 metre building height and the loss of privacy with unit balconies overlooking homes on the opposite side of Heyson Street.

The council has questioned the ACT Planning and Land Authority about the decision.

Council chairman Tom Anderson said it was the first time the council had sought a clarification of the terms of any development approval. Continue reading »

Cotter_rdThe Weston Creek Community Council is disappointed with the comments made by Minister Rattenbury this week over the proposed duplication of the last leg of the Cotter Road between the Tuggeranong Parkway and McCulloch Street Curtin.

At a time when RoadsACT have completed the plans, The National Capital Authority has approved the proposed development, the matter went to the ACT Cabinet in 2015/16 for possible funding [sadly it wasn’t funded for the last year] and will go again for the 2016/17 budget, and the ACT Opposition has said that it will fast forward the completion of the road if elected, Minister Rattenbury objects to the proposal because apparently we are all supposed to abandon our cars and catch buses (we don’t see light rail coming to Weston Creek and Molonglo any time soon so it must be a bus!!).
