Totally agree with Peter Reynolds article.

As a Civil Engineer, it's ridiculous to locally constrict an established (30+ years) 2 lane arterial road to one lane in an attempt to improve the (unpublished) accident rate of a nearby intersection - and then to install a painted 'island' and a gross bicycle lane because of a 'principle' and the powerful bicycle lobby when there's already a safer bicycle path meters away. Those in authority need to experience the danger of merging traffic anytime around peak hour, as well as noting the confusion, frustration and anger of drivers.

If the Namatjira/Streeton intersection is of such concern, then I suggest a 2 lane roundabout or a total realignment of Namatjira Drive.

As a cyclist using the roadway it was a relief when on road cycle lane was put in place. A clear benefit of constraining the trafic flow is that it slows down the traffic, thereby making it safer for everyone, including motorists. You think the accident rate is high because of a few cyclists?!! Take a breath, enjoy the 5 seconds that you get held up and then be one your way.

Still problems here? Of course there are. The cycle lane was never the cause of the problems, and therefore removing it was never going to solve them.

I believe there is a better solution. And the previous attempt has failed for a number of reasons.

I suggest that we don't restrict the road to one lane, but use the two lanes more affectively. You could give turning traffic a whole lane to themselves instead of just a slip lane.

This will increase the flow of traffic, and reduce the risk to traffic turning left onto streeton from Hilder st and Namatjira. While also making it easier to turn right.

The main reason the current solution fails is the need for traffic to merge. Because cars get banked up in the slip lane while trying to merge into traffic at 80km/h, if they had their whole lane to get up to speed things would be much safer and traffice would flow much easier.
