What is happening at the gardens ?

It looks all very quiet at the moment, but the working group has been working on funding with the ACT Government and the new name for the old CIT gardens.

The gardens will most likely be called "Fetherston Gardens" in honor of Tony Fetherston though this process still has to be worked through. He was a foundation member of the Australian Institute of Horticulture in Canberra.

The First Official Meeting of the Community Council Working Group on the CIT Park and Gardens is on Thursday, 22 April 2010 at 7.30pm in the Hawkes room at the Weston Club.

Park's group shapes up

The community working group to oversee the transformation of the current gardens at the former CIT School of Horticulture into Weston Creek's premier park is starting to take shape. Kerstin Linton, one of the residents who fought for the retention of the gardens which had been pencilled in as a site for high rise apartments, will chair the new committee. She said she had already received correspondence from a number of Weston Creek residents eager to lend a hand. "We have 12 peple on our working group already, and some community groups have also indicated they are keen to help," Ms Linto said.

Community “Walk in the Park”

The Community “Walk in the Park” held on Sunday 21 March 2010 in the CIT Gardens Park, was a great success. Over 50 people attended and spent over an hour becoming acquainted [and in some cases re-acquainted] with the mature trees and open spaces in the new Community Park.

Weston ParkA walk through of the Weston Creek Community Park is being organised for mid-day Sunday 21 March to enable Weston Creek residents to view and appreciate the park. Residents may recall the recent government agreement to the Council’s representations to most of the gardens at the former Weston CIT site into a Community Park.

WCCC is not a local government body. For government matters contact CanberraConnect.

The WCCC holds open public meetings on last Wednesday of the month - see Meetings for a timetable.

The meetings are held at The Weston Club, Liardet Street, Weston at 7.30pm (map). We regularly have invited speakers, politicians and other representatives, with other organisations (eg ACT Policing) also regularly attending.

There are no membership fees for the WCCC and any resident of Weston Creek is able to contact the WCCC to seek assistance or advice. All members of the committee are volunteers and no one receives payment for any activities. The Council also receives financial support from the ACT Government.
